Other potential #8220;different#8221; groups that you could consider: education level, age, appearance, health, physical/mental ability, etc. Now that you have a group in mind that you have been involved with somehow, the trick is to write an essay that shows how you were affected by them in some wayand that what you first felt about them (your opinion) was somehow changed (or not). And then why that mattered. What you don#8217;t want to professional, do with this essay is write a general explanation of queen's some group you worked with and how they made you feel on a general level and how this changed you in some general way.

Share how you felt about Sandy Hook Essay, it, and what led up to the problem you faced with this group.

3. Communication! Explain the steps you took with this group to queen's generator, handle the problem. Professional And Therapeutic! 4. Share what you learned from working on this problem with this group. *Make sure to include something about how your initial feelings or opinions about this group changed along the procon abortion way. 5. Communication! Describe how you intend to use what you learned in this process in your future . It#8217;s ideal if you can link that somehow to what you plan to study or your life goals. If you write about 100 words for 1920s american each step, you should end up with a robust first draft. #8220;Describe a circumstance, obstacle or conflict in your life and the skills and and therapeutic, resources you used to resolve it. Did it change you? If so, how?#8221; This prompt is more direct, and of scientific method, should be easier to write about. It is more of a straight personal statement type of essay, in and therapeutic that they are looking to characteristics, understand what you are made of, what core qualities, characteristics or values you have that make you effective in your life. The key is to think of a time or moment when you dealt with some type of professional communication problem (#8220;obstacle or conflict#8221;). The problem does not have to Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting, be some huge catastrophe or crisis (even though those can work.) Often, something everyday or simple works even betteras long as it illustrates a larger life lesson for you.

Then make sure to explain how you solved, handled or dealt with it#8212;and make sure to include the specific #8220;skills and resources#8221; you used in professional communication the process. The questions in procon abortion Topic B are actually almost the professional same as Prompt 4 for the Common Application. Sample Essay Responses and Rater Commentary for the Argument Task. The sample essays that follow were written in response to the prompt that appears below . The rater commentary that follows each sample essay explains how the response meets the criteria for that score. For a more complete understanding of the criteria for each score point, see the professional, Analyze an Argument Scoring Guide. In surveys Mason City residents rank water sports (swimming, boating and fishing) among their favorite recreational activities. The Mason River flowing through the city is rarely used for these pursuits, however, and the city park department devotes little of queen's reference its budget to maintaining riverside recreational facilities. For years there have been complaints from residents about the quality of the river's water and the river's smell. In response, the professional and therapeutic, state has recently announced plans to clean up Mason River. Coercive Power. Use of the communication, river for water sports is therefore sure to increase. The city government should for that reason devote more money in this year's budget to procon abortion riverside recreational facilities.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Professional And Therapeutic Communication. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on Hook Elementary the assumptions and what the and therapeutic communication, implications are if the assumptions prove unwarranted. Note: All responses are reproduced exactly as written, including errors, misspellings, etc., if any. While it may be true that the Mason City government ought to devote more money to riverside recreational facilities, this author's argument does not make a cogent case for increased resources based on river use. Procon Abortion. It is easy to understand why city residents would want a cleaner river, but this argument is rife with holes and assumptions, and thus, not strong enough to lead to increased funding. Citing surveys of city residents, the author reports city resident's love of water sports. It is not clear, however, the scope and validity of professional and therapeutic communication that survey.

For example, the survey could have asked residents if they prefer using the river for water sports or would like to see a hydroelectric dam built, which may have swayed residents toward river sports. Procon Abortion. The sample may not have been representative of city residents, asking only those residents who live upon professional communication, the river. The survey may have been 10 pages long, with 2 questions dedicated to river sports. We just do not know. Unless the survey is fully representative, valid, and reliable, it can not be used to effectively back the author's argument.

Additionally, the author implies that residents do not use the river for swimming, boating, and fishing, despite their professed interest, because the water is polluted and smelly. While a polluted, smelly river would likely cut down on river sports, a concrete connection between the american, resident's lack of river use and the river's current state is not effectively made. And Therapeutic. Though there have been complaints, we do not know if there have been numerous complaints from a wide range of people, or perhaps from one or two individuals who made numerous complaints. To strengthen his/her argument, the author would benefit from implementing a normed survey asking a wide range of residents why they do not currently use the river. Building upon the implication that residents do not use the river due to american the quality of the river's water and the smell, the author suggests that a river clean up will result in increased river usage. If the communication, river's water quality and smell result from problems which can be cleaned, this may be true. For example, if the decreased water quality and aroma is caused by pollution by factories along the river, this conceivably could be remedied.

But if the quality and aroma results from the natural mineral deposits in the water or surrounding rock, this may not be true. There are some bodies of water which emit a strong smell of sulphur due to power example the geography of the area. And Therapeutic. This is not something likely to be afffected by a clean-up. Consequently, a river clean up may have no impact upon river usage. Regardless of whether the river's quality is able to be improved or not, the author does not effectively show a connection between water quality and Shooting Essay river usage. A clean, beautiful, safe river often adds to a city's property values, leads to increased tourism and revenue from those who come to take advantage of the river, and a better overall quality of and therapeutic life for residents. For these reasons, city government may decide to queen's reference generator invest in improving riverside recreational facilities. Professional And Therapeutic Communication. However, this author's argument is not likely significantly persuade the city goverment to allocate increased funding. Rater Commentary for queen's reference, Essay Response Score 6. This insightful response identifies important assumptions and thoroughly examines their implications.

The essay shows that the proposal to spend more on riverside recreational facilities rests on three questionable assumptions, namely: that the survey provides a reliable basis for budget planning that the river’s pollution and odor are the only reasons for professional and therapeutic communication, its limited recreational use that efforts to coercive power clean the water and remove the odor will be successful. By showing that each assumption is and therapeutic communication, highly suspect, this essay demonstrates the weakness of the entire argument. For example, paragraph 2 points out that the survey might not have used a representative sample, might have offered limited choices, and United and Federalism might have contained very few questions on professional and therapeutic communication water sports. Paragraph 3 examines the tenuous connection between complaints and limited use of the river for recreation. Queen's University Reference. Complaints about water quality and odor may be coming from only a few people and, even if such complaints are numerous, other completely different factors may be much more significant in reducing river usage. Finally, paragraph 4 explains that certain geologic features may prevent effective river clean-up. Details such as these provide compelling support. In addition, careful organization ensures that each new point builds upon professional, the previous ones. Queen's. For example, note the clear transitions at the beginning of paragraphs 3 and 4, as well as the logical sequence of sentences within paragraphs (specifically paragraph 4). Although this essay does contain minor errors, it still conveys ideas fluently.

Note the effective word choices (e.g., rife with . . . assumptions and may have swayed residents). In addition, sentences are not merely varied; they also display skillful embedding of subordinate elements. Since this response offers cogent examination of the argument and conveys meaning skillfully, it earns a score of 6. The author of this proposal to professional and therapeutic increase the budget for Mason City riverside recreational facilities offers an interesting argument but to move forward on the proposal would definitely require more information and thought. Elementary Essay. While the correlations stated are logical and probable, there may be hidden factors that prevent the City from diverting resources to this project. For example, consider the survey rankings among Mason City residents.

The thought is communication, that such high regard for 1920s dream, water sports will translate into usage. But, survey responses can hardly be used as indicators of actual behavior. Many surveys conducted after the winter holidays reveal people who list exercise and weight loss as a top priority. Yet every profession does not equal a new gym membership. Even the wording of the professional and therapeutic, survey results remain ambiguous and vague.

While water sports may be among the residents' favorite activities, this allows for many other favorites. What remains unknown is the priorities of the general public. Do they favor these water sports above a softball field or soccer field? Are they willing to sacrifice the municipal golf course for Government, better riverside facilities? Indeed the survey hardly provides enough information to discern future use of improved facilities. Closely linked to professional and therapeutic communication the surveys is the bold assumption that a cleaner river will result in increased usage. While it is characteristics of scientific, not illogical to expect some increase, at what level will people begin to use the river? The answer to this question requires a survey to find out the professional, reasons our residents use or do not use the river.

Is river water quality the primary limiting factor to usage or the Sandy Hook Shooting, lack of docks and piers? Are people more interested in water sports than the recreational activities that they are already engaged in? These questions will help the city government forecast how much river usage will increase and to assign a proportional increase to the budget. Likewise, the author is optimistic regarding the state promise to clean the river. We need to hear the source of the and therapeutic, voices and consider any ulterior motives.

Is this a campaign year and States Government and Federalism the plans a campaign promise from the state representative? What is the timeline for the clean-up effort? Will the state fully fund this project? We can imagine the misuse of funds in renovating the riverside facilities only to watch the new buildings fall into dilapidation while the state drags the river clean-up. Last, the author does not consider where these additional funds will be diverted from. The current budget situation must be assessed to determine if this increase can be afforded. In a sense, the City may not be willing to draw money away from other key projects from road improvements to professional communication schools and education. The author naively assumes that the money can simply appear without forethought on where it will come from. Examining all the various angles and factors involved with improving riverside recreational facilities, the argument does not justify increasing the budget. While the proposal does highlight a possibility, more information is required to warrant any action.

Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 5. Each paragraph in american, the body of this perceptive essay identifies and examines an unstated assumption that is crucial to the argument. And Therapeutic Communication. The major assumptions discussed are: that a survey can accurately predict behavior that cleaning the procon abortion, river will, in itself, increase recreational usage that state plans to clean the professional and therapeutic communication, river will actually be realized that Mason City can afford to spend more on riverside recreational facilities. Support within each paragraph is both thoughtful and thorough. For example, paragraph 2 points out Sandy Essay vagueness in the wording of the survey: Even if water sports rank among the favorite recreational activities of Mason City residents, other sports may still be much more popular. Thus, if the first assumption proves unwarranted, the argument to fund riverside facilities rather than soccer fields or golf courses becomes much weaker. Paragraph 4 considers several reasons why river clean-up plans may not be successful (the plans may be nothing more than campaign promises or funding may not be adequate). Thus, the weakness of the third assumption undermines the argument that river recreation will increase and riverside improvements will be needed at all. Instead of dismissing each assumption in communication, isolation, this response places them in characteristics of scientific, a logical order and considers their connections. Note the appropriate transitions between and within paragraphs, clarifying the links among the communication, assumptions (e.g., Closely linked to the surveys or The answer to this question requires. ). Along with strong development, this response also displays facility with language.

Minor errors in punctuation are present, but word choices are apt and sentences suitably varied in pattern and length. The response uses a number of rhetorical questions, but the implied answers are always clear enough to support the queen's university generator, points being made. Thus, the response satisfies all requirements for professional and therapeutic communication, a score of university generator 5, but its development is professional communication, not thorough or compelling enough for a 6. The problem with the arguement is the assumption that if the Mason River were cleaned up, that people would use it for water sports and recreation. This is not necessarily true, as people may rank water sports among their favorite recreational activities, but that does not mean that those same people have the financial ability, time or equipment to pursue those interests. However, even if the Sandy Shooting Essay, writer of the arguement is correct in assuming that the Mason River will be used more by and therapeutic communication, the city's residents, the 1920s dream, arguement does not say why the recreational facilities need more money. If recreational facilities already exist along the professional, Mason River, why should the city allot more money to fund them?

If the 1920s american dream, recreational facilities already in existence will be used more in the coming years, then they will be making more money for themselves, eliminating the need for the city government to devote more money to them. According to and therapeutic the arguement, the reason people are not using the Mason River for water sports is because of the smell and the quality of water, not because the recreational facilities are unacceptable. If the city government alloted more money to the recreational facilities, then the budget is being cut from States Essay some other important city project. Also, if the assumptions proved unwarranted, and more people did not use the professional, river for recreation, then much money has been wasted, not only the money for the recreational facilities, but also the characteristics, money that was used to clean up the river to attract more people in the first place. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 4. This competent response identifies two unstated assumptions: that cleaning up the and therapeutic, Mason River will lead to increased recreational use that existing facilities along the river need more funding. Paragraph 1 offers reasons why the first assumption is questionable (e.g., residents may not have the necessary time or money for 1920s american, water sports).

Similarly, paragraphs 2 and 3 explain that riverside recreational facilities may already be adequate and may, in fact, produce additional income if usage increases. Thus, the response is adequately developed and satisfactorily organized to show how the argument depends on questionable assumptions. However, this essay does not rise to a score of and therapeutic 5 because it fails to consider several other unstated assumptions (e.g., that the survey is power, reliable or that the efforts to clean the river will be successful). And Therapeutic Communication. Furthermore, the final paragraph makes some extraneous, unsupported assertions of its own. Example. Mason City may actually have a budget surplus so that cuts to other projects will not be necessary, and cleaning the river may provide other real benefits even if it is not used more for water sports. This response is generally free of and therapeutic errors in grammar and procon abortion usage and communication displays sufficient control of language to support a score of 4. Surveys are created to speak for the people; however, surveys do not always speak for example, the whole community. Professional. A survey completed by 1920s american dream, Mason City residents concluded that the residents enjoy water sports as a form of professional recreation.

If that is so evident, why has the Sandy Hook Shooting Essay, river not been used? The blame can not be soley be placed on the city park department. The city park department can only do as much as they observe. The real issue is not the professional communication, residents use of the river, but their desire for of scientific method, a more pleasant smell and a more pleasant sight. If the city government cleans the river, it might take years for the smell to go away. If the budget is changed to accomodate the clean up of the Mason River, other problems will arise. The residents will then begin to professional and therapeutic communication complain about other issues in their city that will be ignored because of the great emphasis being placed on Mason River. If more money is taken out of the budget to clean the river an assumption can be made. 1920s. This assumption is that the budget for another part of cit maintenance or building will be tapped into and therapeutic, to.

In addition, to the budget being used to clean up Mason River, it will also be allocated in increasing riverside recreational facilites. The government is trying to appease its residents, and procon abortion one can warrant that the role of the government is to communication please the reference generator, people. There are many assumptions being made; however, the government can not make the assumption that people want the river to be cleaned so that they can use it for recreational water activities. The government has to realize the long term effects that their decision will have on the monetary value of their budget. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 3. Even though much of this essay is tangential, it offers some relevant examination of the argument’s assumptions. The early sentences mention a questionable assumption (that the survey results are reliable) but do not explain how the and therapeutic, survey might have been flawed. Then the response drifts to irrelevant matters a defense of the city park department, a prediction of budget problems and the problem of United pleasing city residents.

Some statements even introduce unwarranted assumptions that are not part of the original argument (e.g., The residents will then begin to complain about other issues and This assumption is that the budget for another part of city maintenance or building will be tapped into). Near the end, the and therapeutic, response does correctly note that city government should not assume that residents want to queen's reference generator use the river for recreation. Hence, the proposal to increase funding for riverside recreational facilities may not be justified. In summary, the professional and therapeutic, language in this response is reasonably clear, but its examination of characteristics unstated assumptions remains limited and therefore earns a score of 3. This statement looks like logical, but there are some wrong sentences in it which is communication, not logical. First, this statement mentions raking water sports as their favorite recreational activities at the first sentence. However, it seems to queen's reference have a ralation between the professional and therapeutic, first sentence and the setence which mentions that increase the quality of the river's water and characteristics of scientific the river's smell.

This is a wrong cause and result to professional and therapeutic solve the problem. Second, as a reponse to queen's university generator the complaints from residents, the and therapeutic, state plan to clean up the river. As a result, the state expects that water sports will increase. When you look at two sentences, the Hook, result is and therapeutic, not appropriate for the cause. Third, the last statement is the conclusion. However, even though residents rank water sports, the city government might devote the budget to another issue.

This statement is also a wrong cause and result. In summary, the Sandy Elementary Essay, statement is professional and therapeutic, not logical because there are some errors in it. The supporting setences are not strong enough to support this issue. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 2. Although this essay appears to be carefully organized, it does not follow the directions for Elementary Shooting, the assigned task. In his/her vague references to causal fallacies, the and therapeutic, writer attempts logical analysis but never refers to any unstated assumptions. Furthermore, several errors in grammar and sentence structure interfere with meaning (e.g., This statement looks like logical, but there are some wrong sentences in it which is not logical). Because this response does not follow the directions for the assigned task and contains errors in sentence structure and logical development, it earns a score of characteristics of scientific 2.

The statement assumes that everyone in communication, Mason City enjoys some sort of recreational activity, which may not be necessarily true. The statement also assumes that if the state cleans up the river, the generator, use of the river for water sports will definitely increase. Rater Commentary for Essay Response Score 1. The brevity of this two-sentence response makes it fundamentally deficient. Sentence 1 states an assumption that is actually not present in the argument, and communication sentence 2 correctly states an Sandy Hook assumption but provides no discussion of its implications. Although the response may begin to address the assigned task, it offers no development.

As such, it is clearly extremely brief . providing little evidence of an and therapeutic communication organized response and earns a score of 1. Register for Elementary Essay, the GRE General Test. None but a fiend could meditate such a vengeance,” cries Cora as Magua describes the way he will take revenge on her father (p. 144). Soon after, Hawkeye and the Mohicans rescue the prisoners, but Magua manages to Sandy Essay run away. After Munro finds out that no reinforcements will arrive, he surrenders the fort.

Regardless of the promise to reference generator ensure peaceful retreat, the French let their Indian allies attack the withdrawing soldiers. Dr. Michael Fine: Capitalism Is Bad for Your Health. Chloe Caldwell: My Favorite Songs Are Like Personal Essays. Chloe Caldwell’s first two books, the essay collection Legs Get Led Astray and novella Women , built up an almost-cultish audience of devoted readers who return to her books the way fans of a band play favorite albums on repeat. The music analogy is deliberate, as Caldwell’s writing is heavily infused with references to and therapeutic communication, music. 1920s. The title of her first essay collection is a lyric from the Okkervil River song, “Last Love Song For Now,” and her new collection, I’ll Tell You In Person (Coffee House Press/Emily Books, October 4), begins with an epigraph from David Berman, the professional and therapeutic communication lead singer of the Silver Jews. It’s hard to read more than a few pages of Caldwell’s writing without hearing one of the songs she mentions play in your head, if you’re lucky enough to know that song. Over email, I asked her a series of questions about how music works in her writing and life. — Andrew Bomback for Guernica.

Guernica: One of the things I love about the Shooting way you use music in your writing is that you don’t dumb it down for your audience. Professional Communication. You reference bands and songs that may not be familiar to readers, often without explanatory details. How do you imagine your readers processing these lesser known music references in your writing? Chloe Caldwell: I don’t feel the need to educate people with a parenthetical aside like “Great song by the way!” How obnoxious that would be. I never thought about university reference, people learning about communication, new music from my books, but if they do, that’s great. Procon Abortion. Music is such a huge part of my life that it’s obvious it would sneak into my writing in a casual way. I’m not trying to and therapeutic, choose obscure songs. 1920s Dream. Recently my mom said, “You write about me so much!” after she read a galley of and therapeutic, my new book. Sandy Elementary Shooting Essay. It’s the same with music as with my mom: since my books are first-person narratives, it makes sense songs would sneak in. And I’m writing exactly what I listened to, so I never have the option of using a less obscure song.

You are what you listen to. Guernica: When you’re drafting, do you have a song playing in professional and therapeutic the background so that your memory is as accurate as possible? Chloe Caldwell: I usually do not try to make my memory as accurate as possible and listen to queen's reference, the songs I am writing about while writing. What I will do, though, is choose songs or albums that evoke a specific feeling. I wrote Women to and therapeutic communication, the same three songs for a year: “I Follow Rivers” by Lykke Li, “Pink Rabbits” by The National, and dream “Devon” by Grimes. All break-up songs. I wanted the book to stay in that tone of professional and therapeutic, heartache, and those songs helped me access it. Method. Many of professional and therapeutic, my writer friends can’t listen to music with lyrics while writing, but it doesn’t bother me at all. The one time I did use music to trigger memory accuracy was for I’ll Tell You In Person ( ITYIP ). I was encouraged by an editor to write about my parents’ divorce, and I knew I had to do it through music and dream how music was an professional and therapeutic communication, escape for Hook Shooting Essay me as a teenager. Professional And Therapeutic. So I wrote the essay “Music and the Boys” and got to indulge in a bunch of Government and Federalism, ’ 90s and professional early 2000s music. I even made a Spotify playlist for it, but some of States Government and Federalism, those songs are so bad I didn’t end up listening to it much.

One thing I stopped doing while writing about professional and therapeutic communication, music (at least, mostly) is 1920s american including a bunch of song lyrics. That was a habit for professional me, and I don’t think it’s effective. Queen's University Reference Generator. It’s trying to get the reader to see why the song was so important to and therapeutic communication, you, and it rarely works well. United Government And Federalism. Most people don’t want to and therapeutic, read half a page of italicized song lyrics. So often I still put lyrics into my first drafts but cut them later. I didn’t like that “singing” was something someone could command you to do, and when you said no, you were a dick.

Guernica: In the new collection’s essay “Failing Singing” you write about procon abortion, singing during your childhood and communication teenage years. How much has your singing background prepared you for the intimacy required in 1920s american writing a personal essay? How does the experience of professional, being exposed onstage compare to the experience of Essay, being exposed on the page? Chloe Caldwell: In that essay I am trying to figure out (and I don’t, not really) why I became so turned off by singing, and what I’ve concluded is communication that it made me feel too vulnerable. I didn’t like that “singing” was something someone could command you to do, and when you said no, you were a dick.

With writing personal material, at least you can take a long time to decide what to expose, right? You don’t have to do readings, and procon abortion people can still access what you’ve made — your books. Singing in front of people is like, if you flub, you’re fucked. It’s like writing an essay on the spot. This is why I’m so enamored with people who do stand-up comedy and storytelling series. I suppose I’m terrified of the immediacy of the professional form. After a singing recital, people are judging how well you did in United Government and Federalism that moment on that day, five minutes ago. With readings, they are judging something you wrote a year ago, or five years ago, a finished project, unless you’re one of those writers who works out their material during readings and reads from works-in-progress. I’d be scared to professional and therapeutic communication, do that.

Guernica: Do you ever think about dream, how you’ll eventually read or perform an professional, essay when drafting? Chloe Caldwell: I never think about doing readings while drafting, to the extent that about three times in power example the past couple months I’ve had the fleeting thought of, “Fuck! I’m gonna have to do readings from this book! What the hell am I going to and therapeutic communication, read?” It feels like that each time with a new book, though. University. You can’t imagine reading from it. Then a year goes by, and you can’t imagine not reading from it. And Therapeutic. But I do think standing at a microphone (this singing essay was originally titled “Microphones”) was a skill I learned through my teens, to stand and perform — and that even though I was nervous, I never peed my pants or had an United Government and Federalism Essay, anxiety attack. The thing I liked about musicals and choosing/learning songs to communication, sing in my voice lessons and 1920s recitals was that the professional songs told stories.

And I’ve always noticed some of my favorite songs are like personal essays. They tell stories; they begin us in university reference generator one place and end us in professional communication another. “Stone” by Okkervil River: personal essay. “The Art Teacher” by United States and Federalism Rufus Wainwright: personal essay. “The Opposite of Hallelujah” by Jens Lekman: personal essay. Any song by Joanna Newsom: experimental personal essay. I like songs that have tiny mundane and concrete details like the ones I enjoy putting into my essays. Something I forgot to mention in “Failing Singing” (goddammit) is that once, after practicing singing to various songs and professional and therapeutic musicals while my dad was home, I asked him how I did. He said something to the effect that I sounded great but that I was mimicking exactly what I was hearing. I could sort of Government and Federalism, change my voice to sound like everyone else’s. I never found my own voice singing as I did with writing. Guernica: I like your analysis of songs as personal essays. Professional And Therapeutic. Which artists/bands do you think align with your writing and which specific songs (besides the ones mentioned above) specifically sound like a Chloe Caldwell essay? Chloe Caldwell: There are musicians I haven’t necessarily mentioned in United States Government and Federalism Essay my books who, I feel, are doing what my essays would do if they were songs.

I would hope so. Their names are: Sharon Van Etten, Claire Boucher (Grimes), Lykke Li, Camille, Soko, Ane Brun, Natalie Prass, Marisa Nadler, Frida Hyvonen, Mitski, Emmy The Great, Angel Olsen, Lady Lamb, and Mirah. These women are around my age, and I’ve read interviews with them, and we write about similar themes: coming of age, feminism, heartbreak, solitude, ambition, therapy (see Sharon Van Etten’s song, “You Know Me Well”), and sexuality. Marisa Nadler even has a song titled “Hungry Is the Ghost” on her new album, about communication, which I had no idea when I wrote my essay “Hungry Ghost” for ITYIP . Then there’s Courtney Barnett who does the stream-of-consciousness thing in dream her songs I do in my essays, particularly her song “Depreston.” Oh, and Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast, of course! I love her upfront take on professional and therapeutic moods and States Government and Federalism Essay hormones and depression and financial/career struggles. She wrote an excellent essay for Lenny Letter , too! Guernica: In “Music and The Boys,” as you mentioned, you weave in a number of hit songs from the professional communication 1990s and 2000s and even include a Beyonce song at coercive, the end. Professional And Therapeutic Communication. The essay feels more “mainstream” than some of your other work, particularly because of the music choices (e.g., Soul Asylum, Macy Gray). Is there a different level of States and Federalism, pressure, or expectation, when writing about professional communication, popular songs that everyone knows and about which everyone has their own distinct memories and feelings? Chloe Caldwell: Ah, so that’s why a friend told me I should publish that essay in queen's generator Seventeen magazine!

It makes sense: “Music and The Boys” would feel more mainstream since it takes place in high school, so there was a need to professional and therapeutic, fit in, to be the same as everyone, to coercive example, like the professional communication music the boys liked, even if I didn’t like it (but I did). I was the person in my family who liked mainstream music and radio. Then, after high school, when my brother caught me listening to Jack Johnson for a year (he’d gotten into dream, my car twice in one year, and I still had “Brushfire Fairytales” in my CD player) and he gently told me it sort of sucked, he gave me the Elliott Smith CD “Either/Or,” which I loved, and then he continued to give me more obscure music. I remember sometimes I’d have something weird like CocoRosie playing in my car and would switch it out with something more mainstream if a friend was coming into professional, my car. Like I hid the part of myself that liked good music. I also enjoy when someone close to procon abortion, me wants to professional and therapeutic communication, recommend me a song and they’re like, “I think you’ll like it—I’m not sure,” as though I am unpredictable in my taste, because I am. But in procon abortion writing about that time, I don’t feel a different level of pressure.

My editor, while we worked on and therapeutic communication that essay, said, “We really don’t know how you feel about this frankly terrible music.” So I added in at one point that I was embarrassed. I didn’t want to add that, though. I felt some loyalty toward the frankly terrible music. I didn’t want to of scientific method, make fun of it, because we loved that music at the time. We didn’t know not to. There’s a sweet innocence to that, to thinking Shakira is the shit. Guernica: The music critic Ben Ratliff has described how a listener can become a “proprietary shareholder” in the music he or she hears. We become “One Who Likes Song X” or “One Who Likes Musician X” or even “One Who Wants to Own All of Musician X’s music.” The proprietary shareholder listens to music with a “vertical sensibility, following a single line through time.” Do you agree with Ratliff’s shareholder ideas when it comes to music?

And do you think it applies to books, yours in particular? Chloe Caldwell: I do agree. Professional And Therapeutic. I have this problem where sometimes I think I own works of procon abortion, art: I do this with music, movies, certain essays. In ITYIP , I mention this habit and the concept of participation mystique, not knowing where you begin and professional communication the artist ends. I suppose I do that with the university musicians I listed in your previous question. In my early twenties, I was a very aggressive music listener. If I drank too much, I’d go behind the communication bar and change a song on the bartender’s iPod. So not only did I identify with what I was listening to, I made other people watch me do it.

So it became my “brand” of sorts. Then I went further and sprinkled the Sandy Elementary songs and and therapeutic bands in my writing, calling Legs Get Led Astray after an Okkervil River lyric, making it my brand even further just to get Will Sheff’s attention (which has not yet worked). I love being “One Who Likes Song X.” I remember once, when I was living in Seattle, I had a voicemail from my dad and brother and they were like, “We’re listening to ‘You Broke My Heart’ by Lavender Diamond talking about method, how you love it.” I also enjoy when someone close to me wants to recommend me a song and they’re like, “I think you’ll like it—I’m not sure,” as though I am unpredictable in my taste, because I am. I’d hope my books are okay on their own, but I certainly love following writers’ trajectories and development over and therapeutic communication, time. Something cool that could happen is if a reader hasn’t heard of me and reads ITYIP , then goes back to my previous works, the way we do with albums. United. That recently happened to me with St. Vincent.

I hadn’t heard of communication, her. Then she was very popular, so I listened to her newest release but realized I like her 2011 album the most. It can be fun to do that, to read and coercive power listen backwards. At Guernica , we’ve spent the and therapeutic communication last 13 years producing uncompromising journalism.
